Initially I was wary because I thought this would be a very commercial site. However this is not so and there is lots here to enjoy and all based on the theme of chocolate. Heaven!

 

The problems cover many of the areas of Numeracy, as one would expect from a site with contents written by Beam and supported by NGfL. There are 2 levels of each problem so you can use it with different abilities.

Go to ‘Learning Zone’, then ‘1.Maths in Chocolate Making’.

 

1. Numbers In Action:

 

Count It Out – Place value

Bits & Pieces – Fractions 1 & 2 ( 2 has percentages)

Chocolate 1 & 2 – Reading scales with decimals

 

2. Work It Out:

 

Adding Machine 1 – TU + TU

Adding Machine 2 – HTU + TU

Bean Delivery 1 – Bonds to 100

Bean Delivery 2 – Bonds to 1000

How Many Times?:

Box the Chocs 1 – TU place value

Box the Chocs 2 – Multiplication

Teamwork 1 - Multiplication

Teamwork 2 – Multiplication

 

3. Shape It Up:

 

Sort the Chocs 1 – regular/irregular in a Carroll Diagram

Sort the Chocs 2 – Parallells in a table

Boxing the Egg 1 – Nets of cubes without lids

Boxing the Egg 2 – Nets of cubes with lids

Storage Grid 1 – Coordinates (Numbers on axes)

Storage Grid 2 – Coordinates in all 4 quadrants

Travel Zones 1 – NSEW

Travel Zones 2 – Left and right turns using LOGO.

 

4. Measure It Out:

Chocolate Weight 1 & 2 – Adding (using scales)

Chocolate Balance 1 & 2 – Beam balances

Journey Times 1 & 2 – Timetables

Shift Times 1 & 2 – Adding time

 

5. Sort the Facts:

 

Top Sellers 1 – Block graph

Top Sellers 2 – Pie Chart

Graphing 1 – Pictogram

Graphing 2 – Block graph

Buying Sweets 1 & 2 – Interpreting Bar Charts

What’s the Chance? 1 – Tallying

What’s the Chance? 2 - Probability

 

 

There is a useful Parents Section that talks them through how to use the site. Included in that is a ‘Jargon Buster’ which gives definitions of all the technical maths terms – almost worth advising them to print it off to have tucked away for reference.
