The Queen Edith School Maths and ICT Project

Several years ago, Jenny Knights, who was then Maths Coordinator at Queen Edith, realised the need to find cheap maths resources that could be used in the new computer suite. All schools are short of money and Queen Edith was no exception! Software is expensive and schools cannot afford to make mistakes in this area.

Jenny realised that there were many free websites catering for Mathematics, and enlisted the help of Year 6 children to evaluate some of these sites at a lunchtime club. With the aid of a grant received from The Gatsby Foundation and St John’s College, Jenny was able to create an area on the school website including links to the games and activities, as well as reviews and other resources.

Knowing which sites to allow children to visit is, as a parent, very daunting, and for schools to actually be able to recommend sites has been incredibly helpful to them. In addition, for teachers both within and beyond Queen Edith, the Maths and ICT Project has been proved an invaluable resource.

The Games and Free Resources section lists the sites that have games on them, or materials such as the Maths Dictionary. The websites can then be recommended for children to access at home or during sessions at school. The Games and Free Resources are listed by maths topic, e.g. Fractions, so that teachers can source material easily. These are then able to be used on computers or interactive whiteboards during Numeracy lessons.

The Website Reviews section lists all the sites that have been reviewed that are still currently available on the Web. Unfortunately some wonderful sites have disappeared over the years.

The Teachers Only section includes sites such as the DfES site and those with lesson plans or interactive resources.

The Parents' Page list sites that are of particular interest to parents wanting to help their child at home.

Whatever your role in helping children with their mathematical learning, we hope that you find the Queen Edith Maths and ICT project helpful.
